  RAPID PROTOTYPING

With the use of Pro/Engineer, Magmasoft, and Camax software and a 5 axis Shoda router, Atlas Castings & Technology is capable of providing rapid prototype castings.

The casting process starts with a pattern. The pattern is a reusable tool from which a mold is made. If a 3D solid model of a casting exists, a pattern can be CNC machined without the need of a 2D drawing, all electronically. The 3D model is imported into Pro/E where it is manipulated to create a pattern and core box by establishing a parting line, adding draft, and expanding to compensate for shrink rule.

An IGES surface model of the pattern and core box is transferred to Atlas' seat of Camax. At this workstation, tool paths are generated to machine the pattern and core box on a five axis CNC router.

While the pattern is being CNC machined, an STL file of the casting is transferred to Magmasoft for solidification modeling. The Foundry Engineer will add rigging (gates and risers) to the model to establish and optimize the casting process. The casting process is checked for turbulence during pouring and proper riser size and location during solidification.

With computer simulation of the process and CNC machining of the pattern, Atlas is able to produce a prototype or first article casting right the first time that meets our customers short delivery requirements.
