  ARGON OXYGEN DECARBURIZATION

In 1978, Atlas was one of the first foundries in the United States to install an Argon Oxygen Decarborization (AOD) vessel. The AOD processes and refines liquid metal that has been previously melted in the electric arc or induction furnace. Oxygen, Argon, or Nitrogen is injected into the molten metal that is contained in the vessel. The process results in extremely accurate control of all elements, especially carbon and sulfur. Lower gas (hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen) content of the metal is also attainable with this process. The net result is improved ductility, impact strengths, weldability, and corrosion resistance of the metal processed through the AOD.

The AOD has enabled Atlas to produce the more difficult alloys currently required today by our customers.

The Atlas melting department encompasses electric arc furnace, induction melting, and AOD technology to produce heats from 800 to 78,000 pounds in 130 different alloys. The alloys produced include steel, alloy steel, martensitic and austenitic stainless steel, duplex and super duplex stainless steel, and nickel base alloys.

Atlas metallurgists routinely work with Customer's engineers to design or modify alloy chemistries to obtain special properties for specific applications.
